Kidney Ultrasound

What is a kidney ultrasound and why is it performed?

A kidney ultrasound is a painless, safe, and highly precise method for assessing the structure and function of the kidneys. It is used for back pain, suspected kidney stones, urinary tract infections, high blood pressure, leg swelling, and other conditions affecting kidney function.

What does the examination include?
• Assessment of the size, structure, and shape of the kidneys
• Detection of stones, cysts, tumors, and inflammatory changes
• Assessment of the width of the renal pelvis and calyces (signs of obstruction)
• Examination of the ureters in the visible segment
• Assessment of surrounding structures as needed

Preparation

• A full bladder is recommended for a better view of the ureters
