Biography

Personal information

  • Prof. Dr. Basara, born in Belgrade, where she was educated and began her medical career.
  • The first and only Orthodox Christian female doctor in the world to serve as a medical clinic director in a Catholic hospital.
  • Recipient of the highest decoration of the Serbian Orthodox Church — Order of Saint Sava, Second Class.

 

Education

  • Completed her master's and doctoral degrees at the Institute of Hematology, University Clinic in Belgrade.
  • Worked as the head of functional diagnostics at the Institute of Hematology, University Clinic in Belgrade.
  • In 1997, she accepted an international invitation and went to Germany to work with a professor she had collaborated with during her stay in Montreal in 1986/87.
  • After successfully obtaining recognition of her medical diploma in Germany, she specialized in internal medicine and subspecialized in hematology and oncology.
  • Became an assistant professor at the University of Mainz, and then a professor at the University of Leipzig.

 

Work Experience

  • Performed 226 transplants during 2009, placing her among the top German transplant centers.
  • Subsequently received an invitation from the Order of Malta to assume the position of director of Medical Clinic I at the University of Kiel teaching hospital from January 1, 2011.
  • Published a total of 128 scientific papers in international scientific journals, with more than 5,000 citations.

 

Scientific Contributions and Results

  • First patient from Southeast Europe cured of acute lymphoblastic leukemia – Philadelphia positive.
  • First patient from Southeast Europe cured of aplastic anemia.
  • Stem cell transplantation success rate — 88%.

 

Clinical Experience

  • Treated over 50,000 hematooncology patients.
  • Performed more than 2,400 stem cell transplants throughout her career.
