What is the first expert ultrasound and why is it done?
The first expert ultrasound is performed between the 11th and 13th week of pregnancy and is the most important examination in the first trimester.
It is done to check whether the baby is developing properly, whether the pregnancy is progressing normally, and whether there is an increased risk of certain chromosomal disorders.
This examination provides important information about fetal viability and growth, the baby’s early anatomy, and the overall status of the pregnancy.
It also serves as the basis for further monitoring of fetal development throughout pregnancy.
What does the examination include?
• Accurate determination of gestational age and calculation of the due date
• Assessment of fetal viability and growth
• Measurement of nuchal translucency (NT)
• Check of the nasal bone and other early markers of chromosomal abnormalities
• Assessment of the baby’s early anatomy
• Examination of the uterus, ovaries, and placenta
